A Boy and Nails
There once was a little boy who had a bad temper.
His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence.
The boy drove 37 nails into the fence on the first day.
Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered gradually decreased.
He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails to the fence.
Finally, the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all.
He told his father about it and the father suggested that the boy pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.
The days passed by and the boy finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone.
The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.
He said, ‘You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say something in anger, it leaves a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out, but it won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there.’
少年と釘
昔、気性の悪い男の子がいました。
父親は彼に釘の入った袋を渡し、機嫌を損ねるたびに柵の裏に釘を打ち込むように言いました。
少年は初日にフェンスに37本の釘を打ち込んだ。
その後数週間かけて、彼が怒りをコントロールする方法を学ぶにつれて、打たれる釘の数は徐々に減りました。
彼は、フェンスに釘を打つよりも、怒りを抑える方が簡単であることに気づきました。
ついに、少年がまったく怒りを失わなくなる日が来ました。
彼がそのことを父親に話すと、父親は少年が怒りを抑えることができるようになるまで、毎日釘を1本抜くよう提案しました。
日が経ち、少年はついに父親に釘がすべてなくなったことを伝えることができました。
父親は息子の手を取り、柵のほうへ連れて行きました。
彼は言った、「よくやったよ、息子よ、でも柵の穴を見てください。フェンスは決して同じものにはなりません。怒りのままに何かを言うと、このように傷跡が残ります。 人間にナイフを刺して引き抜くこともできるが、でも、何度ごめんなさいと言っても、傷は残ります。」
