It Makes a Difference
One morning a young man was wandering along the beach when he saw a boy far away picking up something and very gently throwing into the sea. He quickly paced towards him, surprised to find that the boy was picking up that starfishes which were washed ashore by the tide and throwing them back into the sea.
“Excuse me, why are you throwing the starfishes back into the sea?” He asked.
The boy replied, “Sir, you see the sun will soon rise and the tide will flow away.”
“But don’t you think it is a waste of your time as there are miles and miles of beach and numerous starfishes still lying along it? Surely you can’t keep this act all day long. You can’t possibly make a difference!”
The child ignored the young man’s remark. Then he picked another starfish and threw it into the sea, and said, “it makes a difference for that one. Would you like to join me? It would make a difference.”
There is something very special in each and every one of us. We have all been given the ability to make a difference to shape the future. We must each find our own starfish. And if we throw our starfish wisely and well, the world will be better.
変化をもたらす
ある朝、若い男が浜辺をさまよっていたとき、遠く離れたところで少年が何かを拾い、そっと海に投げ込んでいるのが見えました。 彼は急いで彼のほうに歩み寄り、少年が潮によって海岸に打ち上げられたヒトデを拾って海に投げ返しているのを見て驚きました。
「すみません、なぜヒトデを海に戻すのですか？」と彼は尋ねました。
少年は答えました、「もうすぐ太陽が昇って、潮が流れていくでしょうね。」
「しかし、何マイルも続くビーチと、そこに沿ってまだたくさんのヒトデが横たわっているのに、それは時間の無駄だと思いませんか？確かに、一日中この行為を続けることはできません。なんの変わりもありません！」
少年は青年の発言を無視し、別のヒトデを拾って海に投げ込み、こう言いました。「それはそのヒトデにとって変化をもたらします。私と一緒にいかがですか？それは変化をもたらすでしょう。」
私たち一人一人の中に、何かとても特別なものがあります。 私たちは皆、未来を形作るために変化を起こす能力を与えられています。私たちはそれぞれ自分のヒトデを見つけなければなりません。そして、ヒトデを賢明かつ上手に投げれば、世界はより良くなります。
